Fall Fever: Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins

Elizabeth here…I grew up on the East Coast and relocated to Southern California in 2000. I don’t miss Winter. Or Spring. Or Summer. But, Fall – with its spectacular display of colors – is nature at its finest IMHO. The smell of cinnamon, the crunch of leaves, the sweaters and boots. Did I mention boots? I miss you, Fall!

If you’re a Trader Joe’s addict like I am, you pore over The Fearless Flyer when it hits your mailbox. If Pumpkin Spice is your thing, be sure to try the Pumpkin Rolls with Pumpkin Spice Icing. It’s a seasonal item so don’t wait too long or you’ll miss it! One of my favorite things to do is put mini Cinnamon Whisks in my car (these are the smaller version of a cinnamon broom) so it smells like Fall.

Funny thing about living somewhere that the weather doesn’t change – people go crazy for holidays. Neighbors deck their homes with wreaths and orange lights. Pumpkin Patches pop up on every empty lot. The smaller ones offer traditional pumpkins. Larger ones have bounce houses to entertain the kiddos. Then there is Bates Nut Farm in Valley Center, CA. With 100 acres, this is the Mother of all Pumpkin Patches. There is a petting zoo with mini-donkeys, goats, sheep, llamas, pigs, emus, chickens, peacocks, ducks, geese, pigs, a tortoise & more. There is a 5000 square foot retail store with fresh nuts, dried fruits and homemade fudge. There is a straw maze, hay ride, pony rides, food trucks. And pumpkins galore: Big Macs, Ghost, Cinderella, Jack O’ Lantern, minis, squash, gourds.

What a day!
